Leica + Hermes = $$$$$ With Style

Leica Hermes M7 Special Edition

Just when you think Leica couldn’t possibly get anymore luxurious with its limited special editions, it shoots out this “Very Special Edition” of M7 crapped in calfskin and a Hermes name.

It has all the usual (analog) M7 components & specs with some minor (yet so important) tweaks, for cohesiveness in design. No red logo. Logo is on top of the camera instead of smack in the middle of the front (I never really liked that element). “Auto” dial apparently matches the color of the calfskin. And at this price, Leica better throw in a matching leather shoulder strap and lens hood.

This limited edition with only 200 units will be sold at roughly $14,000 a piece (£8550).

Put it on your Christmas list.

Design Week - Prix Emile Hermès

During Design Week 09 Milan, French luxury brand Hermès held its Prix Emile Hermès competition for the second time. The stated goal of this competition is to help discover young and new object designers in Europe.

This year, the theme was everyday lightness. In the end, the jury selected no first and second prize winners but three third place winners as well as 14 other notable entries (Click here to see all selected projects).

Among them, these two are my favorites. I have no idea how use-able they are from look at them. But they certainly appeal to my visual taste (and I would buy them).

Light Art Performance Photography: Painting With Light

LARP is an emerging Germany-based art form based on the time-lapsed photography technique. With a single light-bulb exposure and the movement of light, the artist creates a scape that blends reality with fantasy.

Color Thesaurus from HP

Tired of those plain color terms? Want to sound exotic, mysterious (and odd)? Well, check out this fun little tool from HP, Color Thesaurus.

So my blog’s color scheme is: canary, tangerine, blue bright and eggshell.

Top 10 Magazine Covers, 2008

I love lists. I love magazine covers. Hence this blog post.
It’s no surprise that more than a few of these Top 10 covers are of or about Barack Obama.

Top 10 Magazine Covers from Time.com’s The Top 10 Everything of 2008 Lists

The lists mostly picked covers with strong, clean and “less is more” designs. Such as this Rolling Stone July cover:
Rolling Stone: Obama
and this Economist February cover:
Economist: Castro's Legacy

However, this is the most innovative cover design in my opinion. It’s different. It illustrates the topic of the cover story. And it definitely catches your eye.

Jonathan Hoefler’s Typographic Poster for Obama ‘08

Take a look at this new addition to the Artists for Obama gallery by renowned typeface design Jonathan Hoefler.

It’s not surprising the campaign would ask Jonathan Hoefler to contribute a poster. Obama’s campaign official logo and other texts use fonts that were actually designed by Hoefler & Frere-Jones. Obama’s logo is in the Requiem font. Everything else including tagline signs are in Gotham.

“Possible”
Possible by Jonathan Hoefler

Artists for Obama is a fundraiser effort by the candidate’s campaign. “Possible” is for sale at $60 with a limited quantity of 4800.

Hoefler & Frere-Jones has some of my favorite sans serif fonts, Gotham and Topaz. And I’m beginning to like Requiem, a serif, too.
